Wardrobe Management

Wardrobe management is an unusual topic to write a blog on; but it’s precisely on account of its uniqueness that it’s worth doing so. You’ve probably had occasions when you opened your wardrobe and the clothes fell out of it; or you pulled out that gorgeous turquoise stole in such a way that all the other, ironed clothes on top of it tumbled out in a mess on the floor; or you just couldn’t find that chic jacket to go with the shirt you purchased specially for next weekend’s party. We don’t blame you if such occasions have caused you to break into tears, or throw a fit.

But stay calm. The key is wardrobe management. And here’s how.

    Wardrobe design

First of all, think carefully about how you want your wardrobe designed. Check the space available in your bedroom, or wherever you would like your wardrobe placed. You may have a carpenter make it for you, or you may buy it off the shelf. Excellent designs are available on the internet. Whatever design you decide upon, we recommend the following at the least: hanging space for your suits, two shelves, a pair of drawers, and a slide-out drawer at the bottom for your shoes.

    Organizing your wardrobe

Organizing your wardrobe is really the crux of wardrobe management. Hence the following recommendations Hang all suits, saris, and trousers from hangers.

    • Use best quality steel hangers. Don’t use plastic ones, since plastic hangers will often not bear the weight of fabrics such as tweed, cotton, and wool.
    • Keep shirts folded one on top of another.
    • Make one pile of clothes for sleepwear.
    • Undergarments, socks, gloves, jewelry, cuff-links, and other fashion accessories go into drawers.
    • Hang ties on a tie-rod fixed to one of the doors of your wardrobe.
    • Wipe your shoes clean, wrap or put them in cloth covers, and store them neatly in the bottom drawer.
    • Boot polish, shoe, and suit brushes go in the shoe drawer.

    Seasonal clothes

If you live in a region of the world where there are clear demarcations of the seasons, it’s a good idea to keep just the current season’s garments in the wardrobe and store the rest in suitcases in the loft or in storage above your wardrobe. As one season comes to an end, and another begins, you can take down those clothes and put them naaway this season. This will ensure that your wardrobe is neatly organized with just the clothes you need for the current season, and not cluttered with garments useless for this season.

    Wardrobe makeover

This is an extremely important element of wardrobe management. Resist the urge to hang on to all the clothes you’ve ever bought, except maybe one or two for sentimental reasons. Once in a while, take stock of your clothes. You may have clothes you haven’t worn in a long while, that you are tired of wearing, that are faded or are out of fashion. It’s time to dispose of them. Make a pile and donate them to the Red Cross, or Salvation Army, or the local missionary organization—they’ll find a good use for them. A periodic wardrobe makeover will keep your wardrobe neat and tidy.
